I was so mesmerized by Liang Yuanwei's work in OCMA the other day. Sharing here are what I didn't see at the exhibition. (The ones I saw were probably like 200cm x 200cm. I'm assuming these are about the same size.)

How do I describe her work.. It is powerful, lush, elegant and delicate at the same time. It is rather intricate than simple but I feel somewhat at ease admiring it.

Just imagining how many days and hours were spent on each work really inspires me. Huge passion with lots of hard work. Simply breathtaking.

 

先日はOCMA にて、リアン・ユアンウェイの作品に心奪われてしまいました。こちらに載せたものはいずれも展示されていたものではないのですが。(展示されていたものは2メートル四方ほどだったと思います。こちらのも同じくらいかしら。)

なんと表現すればよいのか。力強く、華やかで、優雅で、でもどこか繊細なかんじ。入り組んで複雑な作風なのに、眺めているとなんだか心安らぐ。

作品ひとつひとつに一体どのくらいの時間を費やしたのだろう、と想像するだけでも感銘を受けます。巨大な情熱と、計り知れない労力。いやはや、素晴らしい。

She was my classmate in Photography class, in my very first semester at college that started shortly after my arrival in US. I had very hard time communicating in English back then, so I don't know how much she could grasp my story but we chatted a lot over a cup of tea. We took different paths after graduation and 10+ years passed. These photographs were taken by her in 2009 and that's probably the last time I saw her. I happened to discover these photos while digging around my old emails, which triggered me into thinking about her. Hope everything is well with her.

彼女は、私が渡米してすぐに始まったカレッジ最初のセメスターの写真のクラスのクラスメートだったのでした。英語でのやりとりも辛かった頃なので、どれだけ私の話を理解していたかは謎ですが、よくお茶しながらぺちゃくちゃとお喋りしたものでした。卒業後、それぞれ別の道に進み、今や10年以上が経過。この写真は2009年に彼女が撮ったもので、彼女に最後に会ったのも確かその頃。古いメールを整理していたら、この写真たちを発見。彼女のことが懐かしくなったのでした。元気にしてるかな。

Yael Scharaby, the designer behind "Andy Ve Eirn" is a 27 years old designer in Tel Aviv, Israel. "Andy Ve Eirn" was launched in 2010, named after her grandparents who are very important in her life. Her education in textile design specializing knitting gives her the ability to control over the process from designing from the yarn all the way through to the end. All the geometric patterns and minimalist designs are her own originals. Materials are cotton, linen, and viscose in monochromatic neutral tones that everyone loves and won't go wrong with any wardrobes.

Andy Ve Eirnのデザイナー、ヤエルさんはイスラエルのテルアビブに暮らす、27歳のデザイナーです。彼女にとってとても大切な存在である祖父母の名前に因んだ"Andy Ve Eirn"は2010年に立ち上げられました。大学で学んだテキスタイルデザイン、特にニット技術のおかげで制作のプロセスのうち、糸の段階から最後まで、全部自分の手でしっかりコントロール。幾何学模様やミニマルなデザインはすべて、彼女独自のオリジナルです。素材はコットン、リネン、ビスコースなどで、モノトーンやベージュ系の色合いはどんなワードローブにも適応できるマストアイテム。

Now she has a shop that she opened this April where she can both create and sell. I asked her what was the biggest event so far this year for her shop and she told me the episode when an American actress Claire Danes came into her shop and bought 5 items! The actress was shooting a scene for "Homeland" at the old building nearby that day and Yael was watching the cast all day long, hoping that she will enter her shop. When she was about to close the shop, the actress came in with her crew. Yael was very excited but tried to stay cool. After trying on some clothes, which all looked good on her, she made a decision.

さて、今年4月にショップがオープン。制作の場と販売の場がこうして一体化しました。ショップにとって今年の最大イベントは何でしたか？と聞いたところ、アメリカ人女優のクレア・デインズさんがお店にやってきて、5点買って行ってくれた時のエピソードを打ち明けてくれました！クレアさんはその日、近くの古いビルで、『ホームランド』の撮影をしており、ヤエルさんはその様子を一日中眺めながら、彼女がお店に来てくれることを願っていたところ、閉店直前に、お供を引き連れて女優さん登場。ヤエルさんは興奮を抑えつつ、冷静を装ったとのこと。何点か試着し、（どれもとってもよく似合っていた）、ご決断。

Voila! I like those shoes too. (Yes, another weakness of mine is leopard pattern........)

My oldest friend M is a very talented girl in pretty much all departments. It's a piece of cake for her to draw an illustration like above that she shows on her own website, okimonosan. I can say she was the biggest inspiration in my childhood as she was always ahead of everyone academically, athletically, and artistically in a very laid back manner.

一番古い友人であるMちゃんは、昔からどんなことでもこなしてしまう万能女子です。おきものさんウェブサイトのトップに載っている上のようなかわいいイラストもちゃちゃっと描いてのけてしまいます。のんびりしてるのに、お勉強面でも運動面でも芸術面でも常にトップだった彼女なので、子供時代に一番影響を与えてくれた存在といえます。

She is now a kimono instructor under the concept of enjoying the kimono culture more casually. She is also passionate about creating those cutest bears that I strongly recommended her to introduce to Etsy world. I appreciate this inspiring friendship and am hoping to meet up with her very soon again.

そんなMちゃんは現在、もっと気楽に着物を楽しみましょう、というコンセプトの下、お着付けの先生をしています。と同時に、お得意のお裁縫でこんなかわいいくまちゃんを次々と生み出しているので、いつかEtsyに登場させてほしい、という熱い願いを伝えたところなのです。感化し合える関係に感謝しながら、また近々再会できる日を楽しみにしています。

先日従姉妹が絵をメールで送ってくれました。
かわいすぎるのでこちらでご紹介させていただきます。

Artful Gifts from Japan -Handmade & Supplies

I've got lots of lots of heart warming gifts in this trip. Here's a part of it.
The top crocheted knitted floral handbag is made by my talented cousin. It is amazingly pretty! Many thanks to her. It will be worn all the time in this winter. The coral dangly necklace was made by my mom. She used to be so addicted to making jewelry and now her focus is fully back to ceramic. She also gifted me her collection of gemstones assuming that she wouldn't go back to jewelry making any more. I promise that I will use them very wisely!! And..... those beautiful kimono fabrics are from my mom's friend. Since she's a big kimono collector, I asked her where I can get those fabric. Instead of taking me to the place, she brought a bunch of her own. She herself is a very creative person. She showed me this astonishing hanging decoration called "Yanagawa Sagemon", the traditional gift for a newborn baby girl in Yanagawa, Fukuoka. It's so colorful that I got some energy just by looking at it. Thank you so so much!!

We went to IKEA yesterday to get some Christmas items. I will be posting soon....

今回の旅ではたくさんたくさんの心温まる贈り物をいただきました。こちらはそのほんの一部です。上のお花のモコモコニットバッグは従姉妹の作品。かわいすぎ！ほんとにありがとう〜。この冬大活躍しそうです。珊瑚のじゃらじゃらネックレスは母が過去に作ったもの。以前、母はジュエリー作りに没頭していたのですが、今はまた陶芸一筋に。もうジュエリーを作ることはあるまい、と、天然石のコレクション達をたくさん託してくれました。しっかり使わせていただきます！！そして、、、このきれいな着物のハギレ達は母のお友達より。彼女は大の着物コレクターなので、ハギレの仕入れ先をお尋ねしたところ、教えてくれる代わりにどっさり自分のを持ってきてくれたのです。彼女自身、とてもクリエイティブな人で、福岡は柳川の女の子の誕生を祝う伝統的な飾りもの、『柳川さげもん』を見せてくれました。とってもカラフルで、見ているだけで元気が出ました。大感謝です！！

昨日はIKEAでクリスマスアイテムをゲット。また後ほど載せます、、、。

My cousin is a full time nurse / an artist.
We are the same age and we used to send drawings to each other in our childhood all the way through teenage years. Recently we reconnected and started showing our artwork to each other again. While my creative passion went to jewelry making, her passion for painting kept on growing. I don't know how she can manage to find extra time and energy for it before and after such hard nursing work! Her work can be seen at a local coffee shop in Okayama.

私には看護婦でありながらアーティストな従姉妹がいます。
私達は同い年で、小さい頃、10代もずっとお互いに絵を送りあったりしたものです。
最近になり、また連絡を取るようになり、再びお互いの作品を見せ合うようになりました。
私の制作意欲はジュエリーの方へ移転したのですが、彼女の絵への熱意は持続していたのです。
看護婦というタフなお仕事をしながらよくも時間と余力があるもんだなあ、と思うのですが！彼女の作品は岡山の喫茶店に展示されているとのこと。

Speaking of paintings, it was a few weeks ago that my dad received a sweet surprising gift.
First, he received a phone call from this old man who says that he owns two paintings that were painted and gifted by my grandpa (my dad's dad). This man told my dad that since he's getting old, it would be better if those paintings go back to where they belong to. We all knew our grandpa, who passed away long long time ago before I was even born, was a good painter but never knew this to be coming. My dad took a picture of those paintings and emailed to all the family members to share this heartwarming story. So now we are sure that where my cousin's passion is coming from. It skipped generation and went to her.

絵画といえば、数週間ほど前に、父の元に、ステキな贈り物が届きました。
その前に、とあるご老人から電話があり、祖父（父の父）が描いた絵の持ち主であるとのこと。
そのご老人は、自分はもういつ逝くか分からないので、その前に絵を返すべきところへ返そうと思ったそうです。私の生まれるとうの昔に亡くなってしまっていた祖父が絵を描くのが大好きだったのは知っていたのですが、これは予想しなかった展開。父は、早速写真を撮り、親戚中にメールで送り、私たちはこの心温まるエピソードを分かち合いました。というわけで、従姉妹の絵への熱意がどこから来ているのか、再確認。遺伝は世代をひとつ飛び越し、彼女のところに着地したのです。
