Orange Circle, Blade Runner 2049 & Year End News

2017's last Saturday afternoon spent at The Aussie Bean in Orange Circle.

I'm in love with the elegant old buildings in the town of Orange, such gems in Orange County.

It wasn't too long ago since the last visit but many changes were found in restaurants and retail shops.

The Aussie Bean is one of the newest. I enjoyed a cup of flat white & a slice of lamington cake.

2017年最後の土曜日の午後は、オレンジサークルのオッシービーンカフェで過ごしました。

オレンジの街のエレガントな古い建物が好き。オレンジカウンティの魅力スポットです。

前回訪れたときからあまり経っていないのに、レストランやショップがいっぱい変わってました。

このオッシービーンも新しいお店のひとつ。

フラットホワイト(ラテ)とラミングトンケーキをいただきました。

And Blade Runner 2049! 

Though not by Riley Scott, who directed the original film, the sequel turned out to be another masterpiece by Denis Villeneuve who managed to maintain the artistic beauty and the sentiment of Blade Runner's world, which is so incredible considering the original version came out 35 years ago.

The story shifts slowly and is almost 3 hour long but didn't make me want to miss any second of it.

I'm not necessarily keen to syfy movies but Blade Runner is one of the exceptions.

I wonder if there will be the third one. I can't wait already.

そして、ブレード・ランナー 2049！

オリジナルを手掛けたリドリー・スコット監督作ではなかったのですが、

ドゥニ・ヴィルヌーヴ監督、お見事。ブレード・ランナーの美と哀愁の世界観をしっかり引き継いでいるその出来栄えに拍手。オリジナルから35年も経過していることを思うとなおさら、

素晴らしい。

ストーリーはゆっくりとしたテンポで進み、しかも3時間近い長さながら、ずっと釘付けでした。

SF映画が特に好きというわけでもないのですが、ブレード・ランナーは例外のひとつ。

3作目もあるのかな。今から待ちきれません。

What was repeatedly talked about today and I want to keep my eyes on is Iranian protests, 

which they say is larger than 2009's protests.

What I also heard and found surprising is that starting January 1st,

marijuana will be legal in California. 

今日しきりにやっていた、イランの反政府デモのニュース。

2009年よりも大規模だそうで、とても気になっています。

そして、、、1月1日からカリフォルニアでは

マリファナが合法になると聞き、驚いています。

"Life Lessons"

 

It's always good to write down whatever tickles you in everyday life. (And go back to that notebook once in a while.)

That was what I told myself when I found this writing in my old notebook.

Quoted from the movie "Life Lessons"by Martin Scorsesse, one of the three movies in "New York Stories". Other two are "Life without Zoe" by Francis Coppola (written with Sofia Coppola), which unfortunately wasn't my taste, and "Oedipus Wrecks" by Woody Allen, which as usual was very clever with full of sarcastic humors. Anyways, "Life Lessons is starred by Nick Nolte as an artist Lionel Dobie and Rosanna Arquette as his young apprentice / ex-lover Paulette. 

Paulette: "Tell me if I have a talent or I'm wasting my time. Because sometimes I fell like I should quit!"

Lionel: "What the hell difference does it make on what I think? It's yours. I mean, you make art because you have to. Because you have no choice. I'ts not about talent. It's about no choice but do it."

What was more interesting is that I learned late that this movie is loosely based on Dostoevsky's novel, "The Gambler".

And "Crime and Punishment" is what I happen to be reading right now. Odd coincidence!




先日、過去の日記にこんな走り書きを見つけ、ちょっとでも心に引っかかったことは、書き留めておくべし。（そして時々読み返してみるべし）とつくづく思わされました。

これは「ライフ・レッスンズ」というマーティン・スコセッシ監督の映画内で、ニック・ノルティ演じる画家のリオネル・ドビーと、ロザンナ・アークエット演じる若き(元)恋人兼助手のポーレットのやりとり。ちなみにこの映画は「ニューヨーク・ストーリー」という3話からなるオムニバス映画の1話目で、あとの2話は、残念ながらあまりピンとこなかった、フランシス・コッポラ監督&ソフィア・コッポラ脚本の「ゾイのいない人生」と、相変わらず皮肉たっぷりで絶妙だったウディ・アレンの「エディプス・コンプレックス」。

（以下、訳してみました。）

ポーレット：　私には才能があるのか、それとも時間の無駄なのか、はっきり言ってよ。もうやめてしまった方がいいんじゃないかと思うことがあるわ！

リオネル：　俺がどう思うかと一体何の関係があるっていうんだ？自分の（アート）だろ？創作するのは、そうせずにはいられないから。ほかに道がないから。才能の問題じゃなくて、創るしかない。そういうことだろ。

この物語はドストエフスキーの「賭博者」が少しだけ元になっているのだそうで。

今ちょうどドストエフスキーの「罪と罰」を読んでいるところだったので、面白い偶然だなあ、と思ったのでした。

I was so drawn to both Uhm Ji-won and Gyon Hyo-Jin's performances.

Kabukicho Love Hotel (2014) by Ryuichi Hiroki

 

The movie dipicts people going in and out of the love hotel in Kabukicho, Shinjuku.

They have their own personal issues, lies, guilts and immorality but love and kindness also exist there.

Eun-woo Lee especially and Kaho Minami were outstanding.

A little slow on production so far this week.

It might be fatigue from the past week that I wasn't aware of and suddenly got to me!

Here are two necklaces that I finished and posted today.

I set oval purple amethyst in bezel, accentuating with prehnite drop as an anchor and small labradorite beads on the side.

Double strand layering necklace featuring rock crystal quartz and labradorite is sold to my dear regular customer as soon as it was posted. I might be making a similar one again. I'm very grateful!

 

I will be spending the night deciding what to make tomorrow....

 

Watched "The Conjuring" last night.

I thought it has a similar feel to "Insidious" that gave me serious chills,

no wonder, it's directed by the same guy, James Wan.

Victorian houses are so beautiful and just so perfect to play a squeaky haunted house!

昨夜は映画「死霊館」を鑑賞。

ぞぞぞーっとかなりの寒気を覚えた「インシディアス」に雰囲気が似てる、と思ったら、同じジェイムス・ワン監督作でした。

ステキなビクトリア調の家の、ギシギシっと軋むかんじがなんとも。お化け屋敷にピッタリすぎる。

Never Let Me Go (2010) 私を離さないで

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novelm it is a story of three children growing up in English boarding school. That setting itself doesn't seem anything extraordinary. Yet, the school was for special kids with an unavoidable fate. The movie has a quiet, melancholic and emotional mood with outstanding acting. Sci-Fi Drama, directed by Mark Romanek.

原作はカズオ・イシグロの小説。イギリスの寄宿学校で成長していく3人の子供たちの物語。その設定自体はごくありふれたものながら、実はこの学校は、ある避けられない運命を定められた特別な子供たちのために設けられたものだった。静かに、物悲しく、感情的に進んでいくストーリー。それぞれの役者の演技も光ってます。SFドラマ。マーク・ロマネク監督。

 

Under The Skin (2013) アンダー・ザ・スキン 種の捕食

A mysterious woman wanders around the cities and towns in Scotland, interacting with lonely men along the way to end up with self-discovery. Its quiet and monotonous storyline can be found boring, yet the strange and dark mood left lingering visions in me. Scarlett Johansson was perfect for the role. Sci-Fi Mystery, directed by Jonathan Glazer.

スコットランドの街々を彷徨う謎の女性。その道中、孤独な男たちに出会っては関係を持っていくうちに、自身の正体が明らかになっていく。静かで単調な流れを退屈、と言ってしまえばそれまでながら、どことなく不思議で薄暗い雰囲気がよい余韻を残してくれました。スカーレット・ヨハンソンがこれまたピッタリだったし。SFミステリー。ジョナサン・グレーザー監督。

Blade Runner (1982) ブレードランナー

2019 in Los Angeles, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), the retired Blade Runner, was forced back into the mission to terminate 6 fugitive replicants. Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), the boss of the fugitives, is portrayed as a cold hearted rebel but the madness turns something more profound.... Awesome old Sci-Fi ambiance with a little bit of Asian mood with colorful neons in the city. So 80s! Visually beautiful, a melancholic masterpiece. Sci-Fi Action Thriller, directed by Ridley Scott.

2019年のロサンゼルス。退職した元ブレードランナーのリック・デッカード（ハリソン・フォード）は、復職を強いられ、6体の逃亡したレプリカント（人造人間）を処刑するという使命を負う。冷血の反逆者というイメージの脱走者のリーダー、ロイ・バッティ（ルトガー・ハウアー）だが、その狂気の裏にはもっと深い何かが・・・。一昔前のSF感が素敵。ちょっぴりアジアっぽい夜の町に色めくネオン。いかにも80年代！ビジュアル的にも美しく、哀愁漂う傑作の一本。SFアクションスリラー。リドリー・スコット監督。

 

Mr. Holmes (2015) ミスター・ホームズ

Sherlock Holmes, known as the very best detective, turns 93 years old and starts to show the sign of dementia. He becomes haunted by some fragmental memories relating to an unsolved 30-year old case. As he grows a friendship with his housekeeper's young son, the old man's brilliance begins to come back to reveal the mystery from the past. Ian McKellen's old Holmes seemed quite suited, while Sussex's beautiful scenery was just beyond amazing. Mystery Drama, directed by Bill Condon.

天下のシャーロック・ホームズも、93歳を迎え、認知症の影が見え隠れするようになる。そんな中、30年前の未解決事件に関連する記憶が途切れ途切れに彼を襲うようになる。家政婦の息子と交友を育むうちに、老人の才気は徐々に蘇り始め、過去の謎を解いていく。イアン・マッケランの老いたホームズはなかなか見もの。イギリスのサセックスの美しい情景も圧巻物です。因みに真田広之も登場します。ミステリードラマ。ビル・コンドン監督。

 

The Devil's Double (2011) デビルズ・ダブル〜ある影武者の物語〜

The shocking biography of Latif Yahia, who is said to have been a body double of the notorious son of Saddam Hussein, Uday Hussein. Both Uday and Latif are played by Dominic Cooper, which I didn't know till afterward. Yes, he was that good. There are some scenes that are hard to watch but it was all worth it. I couldn't help reading more about Yahia's interviews after the movie, which helped understand the background. There seem to be some controversies over the story's authenticities, yet I found the movie very unforgettable. Biography Thriller Drama, directed by Lee Tamahori.

サダム・フセインの悪名高い息子、ウダイ・フセインの影武者だったと言われる男、ラティフ・ヤヒアの衝撃的バイオグラフィ。ウダイとラティフのどちらもドミニック・クーパーが演じていたというのは後で知ったという、名演技っぷりだったのでした。思わず目を覆ってしまうシーンもいくつか有りつつ、観終わった後に、ヤヒア氏のインタビューを読んで、背景がさらに理解できたというかんじ。どうやら、物語の真偽には物議を醸す部分もあるようですが、映画としては忘れがたい一作といえそう。バイオグラフィ・スリラードラマ。リー・タマホリ監督。（←日本名！？と思いきや、オーストラリアのマオリ族に由来する名前だそうで。）

『妹の恋人』

Benjamin (Benny) looks after his younger sister Juniper (Joon) who has been mentally ill after losing their parents tragically. Things start to change when she fell in love with Sam, an eccentric sweet man, who models himself after Buster Keaton.

Such a cute story!  Johnny Depp played so perfectly as Sam. It became one of my favorite movies.
It definitely has a full of good 90s American movie feel to it!

ベンジャミン（ベニー）は、事故で両親を亡くしてから心を病んでしまった妹のジュニパー（ジューン）の世話をする日々。ある日、バスター・キートンが大好きな風変わりで心優しいサムと恋に落ち、兄妹の生活が変わり始める。

とってもかわいらしいお話。ジョニーデップがサムにピッタリすぎて。大好きな映画に仲間入り。
よき90年代のアメリカ映画という雰囲気満載です。

Last Train Home

『ラスト・トレイン・ホーム』

The story begins when a couple takes a train trip home for Chinese new year along with 130 million other migrant workers - such a hassle! - to reunite with their children but their lifestyle as parents and kids living separately so long have created insolvable conflicts and tension between them...

This documentary movie really made me think of the value in life, the options in life as family.
What's real happiness? How would you fight poverty?


お正月休み。とある夫婦が1億3000万人の出稼ぎ労働者と共にもみくちゃになりながら電車で帰省するところからストーリーは始まる。故郷で暮らす子供たちとは年に一度の再会なのだが、あまりに長い間離れ離れで暮らしているため、反発感と溝は深まるばかり。

人生の価値観についてうーんと考えてしまったドキュメンタリー映画。家族として選ぶ道というか。
本当の幸せは何か？貧困をどうやって戦い抜くか？

 -Nebraska (family drama / comedy) by Alexander Payne
     An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. (IMDb)

 -Philomena (family drama -based on a true story) by Stephen Fears
   A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. (IMDb) 

"Nebraska" is by far my favorite - the sense of humor and black and unique black and white

　倦怠期政治ジャーナリストが、生き別れの子供の消息を捜索しているという女性の話を追うことになる。女性は若き頃、妊娠のため修道院生活を強いられ、かつ子供を奪われていた。



 『ネブラスカ』は中でも一番のお気に入り。ユーモアのセンスと、
ユニークな白黒画像が絶妙。 すばらしいファミリードラマ、かつコメディ。

Jim Jamusch's Movie

"Night on Earth". It became my favorite movie.
Love this kind of short stories.
Five different stories take place in taxis during the same night at five different locations:
Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome and Helsinki.

I liked the sense of humor with a bit of drama.

『ナイト・オン・ザ・プラネット』という映画、お気に入りになりました。
こういう短編ストーリーは大好きです。
5つのストーリーが、同じ夜にタクシー内にて、5つの場所で繰り広げられます。
ロサンゼルス、ニューヨーク、パリ、ローマ、ヘルシンキ。

ユーモアあり、ドラマありで絶妙なセンス。

どのストーリーが好きですか？

気づけばフランス映画と邦画ばかり？
もっぱら、スリリングなミステリー系とドラマ系。

フランス語はやっぱりいい響きだなあ。
（憧れのまま終わりそうであります。）

もう一度観たいのはThe Other Son。（邦題：『もうひとりの息子』。そのまんまか。）
まったく無知だったイスラエルとパレスチナの様子が伺えたのも興味深かった。
（動画はYouTubeからじゃないと観れないみたいです。）

最近のフランス映画を観ていると、フランスの移民（アルジェリア人）事情を匂わせる
描写がとても多くて、アメリカの（メキシコ人）状況と重ね合わせてしまう。
フランスのアラブ系移民となると宗教面での摩擦もあるので
アメリカのヒスパニック系よりもその点は更に緊迫感があるはずで。

力で征した歴史はこうした形で戻ってくるのかと思うと、皮肉な限り。

若者の文化面でも（音楽とか）なーんとなくフランスもうっすらアメリカナイズされてきている
気がして切ない。 フランスはフランスのままでいてほしいなあ、なんて。勝手な願い。

『夢売るふたり』は、最後まで観れなかったのでなおさら気になってます。
松たか子の豹変ぶりも恐ろしく・・・
福岡から上京したふたり、なのね。
コミカルなんだけど、うーーーん、と考えてしまう、
人間心理、特に女子の生き様がうまく描かれている映画だと思ったので、
どんな展開でどう終わるのか、続きを観たいなあ。

"Amadeus"

In accordance with my recent classical music/piano fever, I watched "Amadeus" the other day. Didn't realize this movie is almost 30 years old and I never had a chance to watch it! Makes me wonder which part was historically accurate... What about Wolfie's -not sure if it's his real nickname - high-pitched obnoxious laughs and innocent devilish behaviors?  This kind of super genius' having these helpless flaws is such an irony but that makes him a human I guess. I wonder if Salieri really called him "a little dirty creature".

The story goes on as Antonio Salieri's tale, who was depicted to be so incredibly jealous of Mozart's talent. I read that there WAS a conflict between Salieri and Mozart followed by some rumors and scandals including Salieri's poisoning Mozart to death. The truth remains a mystery that just stimulates our imagination. With full of irony, humor, passion, jealousy, sorrow and insanity, this movie captures our mind and makes us wonder about life and want to talk about it on and on.  

Great casting too. Very charming Tom Hulce & Elizabeth Berridge as Mr.&Mrs. Mozart in contrast to F. Murray Abraham as a very uptight snob, conflicting Salieri.

Life as a genius must be tough and life being jealous of a genius must be a torture.  

Wonder what other great movies themed on artists and musicians in this era are out there.

最近のクラシック音楽＆ピアノ熱につられて、先日『アマデウス』を観ました。考えてみたら３０年も前の映画なんですね。なのに今まで見る機会がなかった。歴史的にはどの辺が正しいんだろう。ウルフィー（っていうのもほんとの愛称なんだろうか）のあの甲高いお下品な笑い声やイノセントでやんちゃな振る舞いなんかは本当なのかな。こんな天才がこんなにどうしようもない欠陥持ちなのはなんとも皮肉なことだけど、人間だもの、ということでしょうか。サリエリはほんとにモーツアルトのことを「小汚いちっぽけな生き物」なんて呼んでたのかな。

さて、ストーリーは、サリエリ（モーツアルトの才能に限りなく嫉妬する様子が描かれている）により語られる。 サリエリとモーツアルトが対立していたのは事実らしく、現に、サリエリがモーツアルトを毒殺した、など、数々の噂やスキャンダルが取り沙汰されていたらしい。事実が分からないところに想像力をくすぐられます。皮肉とユーモアと情熱と嫉妬と哀しみと狂気でいっぱいのこの映画は観る者の心をつかみ、語りたくなる衝動を掻き立てます。

キャストもステキ。モーツアルト夫妻を演じるチャーミングなトム・ハルスとエリザベス・ベリッジに対して、とても保守的なスノッブ、葛藤のサリエリを演じるF・マーリー・エイブラハム。

天才の人生は大変に違いない。と同時に、天才に嫉妬する人生は拷問に違いない。

他にもこの時代のアーティストや音楽家を取り上げたいい映画はあるかなあ。

Inspirational Quotes from "Iron Lady"

As I was growing up, the name "Thatcher" was everywhere on the news and newspapers all the time for a long time. I knew she was a prime minister in England but I didn't know why the media paid so much attention to her. Now time passed and here's the movie for a bit of explanation. I was amazed by Meryl Streep's performance as usual as well as inspired by what this "Iron Lady" said in the movie. Despite the controversy or the judgment on what she's done politically, here are some words that made me think.

子供の頃、『サッチャー』という名前はニュースや新聞にいつも、そして長いこと登場していた印象があります。彼女がイギリスの首相だというのは知っていたものの、なんでそんなに有名なのかは認識していませんでした。そして時が経ち、今こうして映画が説明してくれることに。いつもながら、メリルストリープの演技が素晴らしかったのですが、同時にこの『鉄の女』のセリフには気になるものがいくつかありました。政治面での物議や善悪の判断はさておき、以下、考えさせられた言葉です。

「昔は何かをやってみるということに意味があったのに、今は、何者かになろうと（名声をあげようと）みんな躍起になってる。」

「何？気分はいかがって？人は考えなくなってしまったものだわね。その代わりにどう感じるかになってしまった。『どう感じますか？あまりいい気分はしませんね。申し訳ないですが、私達としてはこういう風に感じて、、、』現代の最大の問題点は、思想や考えに従って行動するよりも、感情を気にする人たちによって政治が動かされているということ。思想や考え。そっちの方が私は興味があるの。（気分ではなくて、）何を考えてるのか、を質問してほしいものだわ。」

二コールキッドマンの映画二本。

二コールキッドマン。
お人形みたいに美しくて、その美しさに気をとられてストーリーに集中できなそう！というイメージだったのですが、『アザーズ』と『ステップフォードワイフ』でちょっと印象が変わったかも。ストーリーはすごく印象的だったのに、さて、主役は誰だったっけ？なんてこともある中、映画と役者が同時に記憶に残るものはステキだと思います。

『アザーズ』は2001年の映画。とにかく初めて観たときの驚きとぞっとするかんじが強烈で、以来、私の中では『アザーズ』＝二コールキッドマンなのです。最近久々にテレビでやっていて懐かしかったのですが、細部はだいぶ忘れていたものの、最後の大きなツイストが頭に焼き付いているため、一度目ほどの「おおおお！」は体験できなかったのが残念。

『ステップフォードワイフ』。二コールキッドマン、こんなお茶目な役もアリなのね、という意外性が楽しめた映画。アンチフェミニズム（古き良きアメリカ？）のような時代錯誤な町に引っ越すことになるキャリアウーマン（をやめる羽目になった）ニコールキッドマンと、マシューブロデリック（サラジェシカパーカーの旦那さん）。ストーリーは漫画的なものの、ドレスとか装飾がカラフルできれいなので、これは何度も楽しめる。

他にも評判のいい映画、たくさんありそうなので機会があれば観てみたいものです。

まだみてないのですが、とっても気になっているサイレント映画です。キャスティングも味のあるフランス人俳優達＋ワンコ。ジャン・デュジャルダンのかたこと英語のインタビューの様子がお茶目で笑える。日曜日、アカデミー賞も勝ち取るのかな。

The ROYAL TENENBAUMS -Movie

Very strange, kooky movie.

I thought I saw all the movies that Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson is in but here is the one I hadn't watched. I got a little bit bored towards the end but it was pretty good.

とっても不思議でヘンテコな映画でした。
ベン・スティラーとオーウェン・ウィルソンの出ている映画は全て見尽くしたかと思っていたら、ここに見ていないのがまだありました。最後の方は少し退屈になったものの、なかなかよかった。

Some of them are just too sad to resist crying but I still like those movies.

悲しすぎて涙が止まらないものもありますが、それでも好きです。
