Hello December & New Jewelry Creation

December has arrived and I continue to create new jewelry in the last month of the year.

Herkimer diamond, mixed metals and mixed gemstone items, etc.

Metals used here are solid yellow gold, yellow or rose gold filled and oxidized sterling silver.

I also intend to feature December’s birthstones, turquoise, lapis lazuli, tanzanite and zircon.

More metals are arriving soon so I can catch up with some more new stuff.

 

Hope everyone will stay warm and keep away from flu and cold throughout the winter season.

12月の到来。今月も新作に励もうと思っています。

ハーキマーダイアモンド、ミックスメタル、天然石を組み合わせたアイテムたち。

使用しているメタルは、ソリッドゴールド、ローズ&イエローゴールドフィル、燻し銀です。

12月の誕生石、トルコ石、ラピスラズリ、タンザナイトやジルコンも登場させたいと思ってます。

また素材のメタルたちが続々と届くので、色々と制作を追いつかせねば。

めっきり寒くなってきましたが、あったかくして風邪を寄せ付けず冬を乗り切りたいですね。

Book - Finding Frida Kahlo

I wrote this a while back, forgot to publish it so here it is.

これ、けっこう前に書いていたのに未公開のままになっていました。。

Beautifully designed "Finding Frida Kahlo".
The book reveals her sketches, letters, a diary, other personal belongings inside painted wooden boxes, chests, a suitcase, and a rustic metal trunk that were purchased by art dealers in Mexico in recent years. When American art curator Barbara Levine found out about this, she approached the dealers, Carlos and Leticia Noyola, with a book idea. So this art book is to say achievement of their team work.



素敵な装丁が目を惹く「Finding Frida Khalo」という本。

この本では、絵画の施された木製の箱、スーツケース、金属製の大きなトランクなどに詰まったフリーダ・カルロのスケッチ、手紙、日記、その他の個人的な所持品のひとつひとつが暴かれている。これらは全て、最近になってメキシコの美術商がとあるルートから買い取ったものだという。本の出版にあたり、このメキシコの美術商、カルロス&レティシア・ノヨラ夫婦の話を聞きつけたアメリカ人アートキュレーターのバーバラ・レヴィーンが彼らに接触し、本作作成のアイデアを持ちかけ、チームワークの末完成した、という背景があった。

I found the story quite unbelievable at first, especially in this day and age, is it possible for such historical treasures to be quietly kept in a privately owned gallery until one day American curator exposes them to the world through a book? Seems surreal!
No matter what, the book is such a beauty where art pieces are carefully put together and photographed that I can't imagine how many hours were spent to complete it.



この話を最初に読んだ時、正直信じがたい、と思ってしまった。今時そんなことってあるだろうか？そんな歴史に残る人物のアート品(秘宝)が、ある日アメリカ人キュレーターによって本で初めて公開されるまで、ひっそりと個人経営のギャラリーに保管されているなんて。ちょっとあり得そうにない。
何はともあれ、本はとても美しく、アートたちがきちっと並べられ、撮影されている。一体どのくらいの時間を費やして完成させたのか、想像を絶する。

Frida's letters and diary written in Spanish are translated in English. Thay are all so painfully personal, making me feel like I'm peeping in something that I'm not supposed to. I want to look away from her life story but I can't keep my eyes off her art.



スペイン語で綴られたフリーダの手紙や日記は英語の翻訳が添えられているのだが、なんともこれがプライベート極まりなく痛々しい内容で、見ちゃいけないものを覗き見している気分にすらさせられる。彼女の人生からは目を背けたいけれど、アートからは目が離せない。

"My Name Is Aram" William Saroyan

 

 

 

"My Name is Aram" by William Saroyan, my recent bedtime book.

 

It's a book of short stories about an Armenian immigrant boy named Aram growing up, sometimes being mischevious while interacting with his friends, family, relatives and people living in Fresno, California in early 1900s.

 

Each character is colorfully portrayed with full of wits and humors in a calm manner. I like all stories - I have a few more stories to finish but I'm certain I like them too - they are all cute and make me smile.

 

Aram's school life stories like "A Nice Old-Fashioned Romance, With Love Lyrics and Everything" are also very sweet. It's surprising though how much the kids back then got physically punished by teachers! It reminds me of my high school days that I witnessed a male teacher slapping a female student, which was quite shocking but it could still easily happen 20 years ago without the abusive teacher being fired. Aram's punishments seem much more severe but as usual, Saroyan writes it as if it's nothing, no drama. Schools, teacher-student relationships, well, childhoods overall, have changed drastically in decades.

Well, a few visits I took to Fresno help me easily picture the farming scene or the empty spacious dry lands in my head, like in "The Pomegranate Trees". It's ashame that pomegranate fruits were unknown and unwanted back then!

 

Three words to describe Saroyan's writing style would be "peaceful", "nostalgic" and "charming".

 

I don't want to but I'm finishing the book soon..

 

 

ウィリアム・サローヤンの「僕の名はアラム」。最近寝る時読んでいる本。

 

アルメニア移民の少年、アラムが1900年代初期のカリフォルニア・フレズノで、時として悪さもしながら、友達、家族、親戚、その他の人々との関わりの中で成長していく短編物語。

 

登場人物の描写がウィットとユーモアに富んで色とりどり。サローヤン独特の穏やかさが漂います。どの物語も好きで(あと数話未読なのですが、好きに違いない)、かわいらしいというか、ついついにっこりしてしまうかんじ。

「愛の詩から何からすべて揃った素敵な昔ふうロマンス」のような学校もののエピソードも、微笑ましい。とはいえ、当時の子供達がいかに教師から体罰を受けていたか、、というのは驚きです。高校時代、女子生徒が男性教員から平手打ちされていたのを目撃してしまった記憶が呼び起こされました。。ショッキングな場面だったものの、20年前はまだ、暴力教師が解雇処分になるような時代ではなかったのです。アラムの受けた体罰はさらに比にならないほど凄まじそうですが、例のごとく、サローヤンは淡々と事も無げに語っています。学校、教師と生徒の関係、というか子供時代そのものが、ここ数十年でいかに変わったか、そんなことも考えてしまいました。

さて、フレズノには何度か訪れたことがあるため、「ザクロの木」を読んでいると、農場風景、もしくは殺風景で広大な枯れ地が頭に浮かびました。当時はザクロもまったく知られてなくて需要もなかったんだなあ。

 

サローヤンの表現スタイルを３つの単語で表すならば、「ほのぼの」「郷愁(懐古)」、「チャーミング」、かな。

 

まだ読み終えたくないけど、終わりに近づいてます。。

Books - Haruki Murakami

 

 

Both Haruki Murakami's books that I liked: the left one in Japanese includes "Firefly" (original version of "Norwegian Wood"), "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman", and "Barn Burning" and the left is "The Strange Library" that I just borrowed the other day.

Compared to his long romance fictions like "Norwegian Wood" or " South of the Border, West of the Sun", I now know for sure that I like his mysterious, daydreamy fantasy fiction short stories so much better. Essays are great too.

 

 

どちらも好きだった村上春樹の本。左は「ノルウェイの森」の原作になったという「蛍」、「めくらやなぎと眠る女」、「納屋を焼く」などを含む短編集。右は、先日借りてきた「不思議な図書館」。

村上春樹作品は、「ノルウェイの森」や「国境の南、太陽の西」のような長編恋愛小説よりも、ミステリーチックで、白昼夢のような幻想的な、短編小説の方がずっと好きだと確信。エッセイも好き。

 

 

 

 

Inside "The Strange Library" is full of artsy illustrations. The translation by Ted Goossen seems very spot on for Murakami's wording manners.

It is a creepy nightmarish story with startling moments here and there yet somewhat cute and heartwarming. Brilliant.

「不思議な図書館」の中身はアートなイラストが満載。テッドグーセンの翻訳も、

村上氏の語調ピッタリそのまま英語バージョンというかんじがする。 

不気味な悪夢のようなストーリーで、ハッとする箇所がちらほらありつつ、

どこか可愛らしくて心温まる。なんとも絶妙。

 

 

 

 

 

 

Books

 

Happy to have found some more inspiring books to read.

1. Loooove this cookbook, "Fresh & Easy" by Jane Hornby. On top of the visual prettiness of all pages filled with images, what I like about the most is the simplicity: the way all the fresh ingredients are neatly laid out and photographed for each recipe, so little time that takes, and no fancy dancy tools or appliances needed, absolutely pressure free. Literally, fresh and easy, yet the outcomes are...delicious and sophisticated! I'm so thankful.
2. "500 Cameras" by Todd Gustavson - I haven't started with this one yet but it shows and talks about history of camera, starting from early 19th century to today. Quite exciting, isn't it?
3. "American Indian Trickster Tales" selected and edited by Richard Erdoes and Alfonso Ortiz - it's a collection of folk myths from various tribes. Each tribe has its own version of how the moon and the sun were brought to its land by tricksters like a coyote and an eagle, for example. The same animals appear in the same themed stories but they play different roles in different stories. Each story is short, 1 - 3 pages long so it's perfect for bedtime reading.

またよい本との出会い。

1. ジェーン・ホーンビー著 "Fresh & Easy" のレシピ本は私の中で大ヒット。全ページステキ画像で埋め尽くされているというビジュアル的な魅力はもちろん、なんといってもシンプルさがよい。レシピごとに新鮮素材がきちっと並べられていて分かりやすく、時間もかからないものばかりで、器具なども敷居の高そうなものはまるで登場しないという、まったくの気楽さ。その題名通り、シンプル&イージー。なのに、出来上がりはとても美味しく洗練されたかんじ。なんともありがたい一冊！
2. トッド・グスタヴソン著 "500 Cameras" 。まだ読み始めてないのですが、こちらは19世紀始めから今日までのカメラの歴史を画像付きで語ったもの。わくわく。
3. リチャード・アードス & アルフォンソ・オーティッツ編 "American Indian Trickster Tales" (tricksterは民間伝承に登場するいたずら好き動物や人間、の意) は、アメリカンインディアンの色んな部族の伝説を集めたもの。例えば、コヨーテやワシによってもたらされた月や太陽発祥のいきさつも、部族によって様々。テーマごとに登場する動物は同じでも、お話がまったく違ったりするのが面白い。それぞれのストーリーは1~3ページと短いので、ベッドタイムにピッタリの読み物です。

 

Home -mini rose and books

A small pot of mini rose joined in my patio this spring, but just as someone at the store warned me, flowers faded and half of the stems turned brown shortly after. I was told that the roses are quite sensitive to the climate change, when they are kept indoor for a while, the outdoor sunlight is too strong for them so you have to slowly make them adjust. I didn't do a good job on that obviously. After the summer is over, I found a tiny rose bud blooming again. Considering how wimpy and almost dead it looked at one point, I'm amazed and happy for the vitality of the plant. The soft pink bud is growing bigger and bigger everyday.

Friday, I take a trip to the library, going through the long weekend's heavy traffic that wears me out.
I return Saroyan and Bukowski and borrow a few books including Sophie Calle and another Bukowski. Sophie Calle's "The Address Book" turns out to be quite outrageous. As usual, I walk around between non-fiction aisles so I stumble upon whatever draws my attention, just pretty much from the look of their spines. I find this "The Address Book" in the photography section. It's a small book with a vintage chic black fabric spine and red cover. Inside the book are the diary styled notes next to moody black and white photographs. The introduction goes: "I found an address book on the Rue des Martyrs. I decided to photocopy the contents before sending it back to its owner..... I will contact the people whose names are noted down... ask them to tell me about the owner of the address book.....Thus, I will get to know this man through his friends and acauaintances.....The man's name is Pierre D." How weird is that!? Ok, this book is coming back with me today.

A address book, Paris, 1983.... Sorry for Pierre D., but I couldn't beat my curiosity on nostalgic and imaginary aspects of the story. You might either feel the same way as me or would find the whole idea nothing but inappropriate and disturbing but I hope I made you at least a little bit curious.

Now reading Bukowski's "Come On In!". I like this one a lot better than "The Roominghouse Madrigals" that I just returned or any other novels that I've read long time ago. Maybe because it is more of his true voice that he left to be published after his death. Nothing can beat truth and genuineness. Sadly, it's not always accepted in the society.

春に小さなミニローズの鉢がベランダに加わったのですが、お店の誰かに忠告された通り、すぐに花は枯れ、茎も半分は茶色になってしまいました。バラは環境の変化にとても敏感で、室内でずっと過ごしていたものには外の日差しは強すぎるので、ちょっとずつ順応させなきゃいけない、と言われたのでした。案の定失敗。。 ところが夏が終わり、小さな蕾を発見。あんなに弱っちく今にも枯れそうだったのに、植物の生命力には驚きです。嬉しい。淡いピンクの蕾は日々大きくなっていってます。

さて、金曜は図書館へ。連休のせいか渋滞がひどくてうんざり。
サロヤンとブコウスキーを返却。新たにソフィ・カルとブコウスキーもう一冊、その他色々新たに借りる。ソフィ・カルの「アドレス・ブック」には驚き。いつも通り、ノン・フィクションのコーナーをうろうろ彷徨い、気になるもの（本の背で判断）をランダムにチョイス。「アドレス・ブック」には写真コーナーで出会う。小ぶりで、黒のビンテージ風な布張りの背に、赤のカバー。日記調の記述と、そこに添えられたその時々の気分に合わせて、といったかんじの白黒写真たち。「Rue de Martyrs でアドレス帳を見つけた。持ち主に返す前に、中身をコピーすることにした。…ここに記されている人々に連絡してみる。…そしてこの持ち主のことを聞き出す。…そうやって持ち主の人物像を彼の友達や知り合いの話から固めていこうと思う。...彼の名前はピエール・D．」 なんて奇想天外！これは読まねば、ということでお持ち帰り決定。

アドレス帳、パリ、1983年、、、。ピエール・D．には申し訳ないけど、そのノスタルジックで想像を掻き立てられる要素に、どうにも好奇心を抑えきれず。。きっと、同じように感じる読者と、なんとも読むに耐え難いと感じる読者、真二つに分かれるのだろうけれど、少なくとものほんのちょっとは興味をそそられるのではないでしょうか。

そして次はブコウスキーの「カモンイン！」。返却した「ルーミングハウス叙情短詩」や昔読んだ小説よりもずっと好きなかんじ。自分の死語発表してほしいと言い残したいう、いわゆる本音の内容だからだろうな。真実や本心に勝るものなし。でも悲しいかな、一般には受け入れられないことが多いということでしょう。

Au café

Sunny Friday afternoon was spent in this local coffee shop, reading and writing while sipping a cup of iced latte. Nice music and cool a/c air kept me in there a while.

Saroyan's "Gaston" is a cute short story about a father and his little girl talking about a small bug, Gaston that resides in a peach seed. Well depicted is the father Saroyan's fantasized world view and personality that wasn't understood by his wife. The innocence of a little girl is so adorable, sometimes cruel.  The story is told calmly, in a subtly melancholic mood that left a warm sentiment in my mind.


近所のコーヒーショップで過ごした金曜の午後。アイスラテを啜りながら、読んだり綴ったり。心地よい音楽とエアコンのせいでついつい長居してしまいました。

サローヤンの「ガストン」は、桃の種の中に潜む小さな虫、ガストンを巡る父と娘の可愛らしいショートストーリー。奥さんとは分かち合えなかったらしき浮世離れした彼の世界観、人物像がよく描かれています。少女の無垢さが愛らしく、時として残酷。ゆったりとした語り口調にどこか物悲しさが漂い、あたたかな余韻が残る、そんなおはなしでした。

Style of the Day & Books

It's been quite hot these days; sleeveless tops are much appreciated!
I returned the books that I borrowed three weeks ago. The best part in Hemingway's "A Movable Feast", to me, was the episode of "F. Scott Fitzgerald", the author of "The Great Gatsby". They were close friends but Hemingway learnt a lot about Fitzgerald when they took a trip together. The way Hemingway described his friend's habits and personality made me laugh. He also mentions about the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald, pointing out that Zelda was always so jealous about Scott's talent that she wanted to distract him from work all the time. Hemingway didn't like it as a friend. This book is just so personal and frankly written that interested and inspired me a lot.
My next book was going to be another one by Hemingway but I decided to take a break. So here are the choices: "Madness in the Family" by William Saroyan & "The Roominghouse Madrigals " by Charles Bukowski. Just as Hemingwayway and all his fellow writer friends, Bukowski is known for a drunkard... I'm not so crazy about that aspect but excited to read his poetry. I wasn't familiar with Saroyan, but my dad recommended. According to Wikipedia, he's Armenian American, born in Fresno, lived in San Franscisco and traveled a lot. He and Hemingway made a little sparks fly at one point... Oh one more thing, he had a trouble drinking too, of course.. Ok, my reading will start tonight.

ここのところけっこう暑く、ノースリーブが活躍です。
今日は3週間前借りた二冊を返しに行きました。ヘミングウェイの『移動祝祭日』で好きだったエピソードはF.スコット・フィッツジェラルドについて。かの有名なグレイトギャッツビーの著者です。二人は親しい間柄だったものの、旅を共にした際にヘミングウェイはフィッツジェラルドのことをさらに知ることになり、、。フィッツジェラルドの癖や性格の描写がなんともおかしくてついつい笑ってしまいました。フィッツジェラルド夫妻の関係についても触れていて、妻ゼルダはスコットの才能にいつも激しく嫉妬していて、彼の仕事の邪魔ばかりしていたとのこと。友人としてはそのことを快く思ってなかった様子。こんなかんじでなんとも個人的かつ率直な内容なのでとても興味深く感化された一冊でした。
次もヘミングウェイの本にしようかと思ったのですが、一拍置くことに。ウィリアム・サローヤンの『Madness in the Family』とチャールズ・ブコウフスキの『The Roominghouse Madrigals』(どちらも邦題見つからず) にしました。ヘミングウェイとその作家友達たち同様、ブコウスキも大酒飲みで有名。その点はまああまりよろしくないですが、、詩集は楽しみ。サローヤンの方は実は知らない作家だったのですが、父の勧めで。ウィキペディアによると、フレズノ(カリフォルニア)生まれのアルメニア系アメリカ人。その後サンフランシスコで暮らしながら、色んな所へ旅もした。ヘミングウェイと火花を散らしたこともあるそうで。。因みにこの方もお酒方面が問題だったようです。やれやれ。さて、今夜から読み始めるとします。

The week went through so extremely quikly and it's already Friday!

I made lots of new jewelry this week, did some catch-ups with my long lost cousin in Japan, received a good news from my folks, and finished reading "The Catcher in the Rye", finally! I liked how the story went towards the end, it was so fun and touching that didn't make me sleepy for the first time since I started this book and I read through the whole thing so fast. Holden's sayings like "...to tell you the truth." and "...killed me" pop up in my head sometimes.

Now I know why this book is so loved. Good books have a good ending. That may apply to movies too.

The weather might be a bit moody this weekend but I am more than ready to spend some relaxing time.

日々の暮らしの中でちょこっとだけ喜びをプラスしてくれるような物事。

今日はどんなことにふふっとなりましたか？

今週もまたあっという間に過ぎていき、もう金曜日！

たくさん新作ジュエリーをアップできたり、日本の従姉妹と久々に近況報告し合えたり、実家からよいニュースが届いたり、『ライ麦畑でつかまえて』を読み終えたり、という一週間でした。そう、やっと！（本のこと。）ストーリーの後半の展開がとてもよかった。読み始めの頃と打って変わって面白くなって初めてうとうとせず、一気に完読。ホールデンの口癖、『ほんとのところ・・』とか『・・・にはやられた』がたまに思い出されます。。（翻訳が気になるところ）

なるほどね。人気なわけだ、と。
よい本はエンディングがよい。これは映画も同じですね。

週末のお天気は怪しそうですが、のんびり過ごす気満々です。
