Kyanite Dream

 

Kyanite's cobalt blue is like sapphire's, but the display of fibrous layers creates the almost metallic glare that is quite unique and unlike any other stones.

Kyanite is fairly newly recognized gemstone in that it had been often mistaken, sold as sapphire or valued equally to sapphire over the past three centuries. 

I wanted to set this teardrop cabochon into something not too simple but a little tribal chic. I like how it turned out and one thing I learned during the stone setting is that special attention needs to be paid not to scratch the surface. Mohs hardness for kyanite is quite low (from a certain direction) compared to sapphire!!

I realized that this was my first time working with kyanite.

カイヤナイトのコバルトブルーはサファイアを思わせるけれど、その繊維質な層がメタリックな輝きを生み出し、他の石とは違った個性を放つ。

サファイアと混同され(売られさえもし)、あるいはサファイアと同等の価値として扱われてきた過去3世紀(18〜20世紀)。そう考えるとカイヤナイトとしての歴史はとても浅い。

このしずく型カボションはシンプルすぎず、少し民族風な雰囲気の出るデザインにしたいなと思ったのですが、まずまず満足な仕上がりになりました。一つ学んだのは、石留めの際には、引っかき傷をつけないよう細心の注意が必要だということ。（ある方向からの引っかきにおいては）サファイアに比べるとモース硬度かなり低めです‼︎

そういえは、カイヤナイトの作品はこれが初めて。
