Laguna Beach Shaws Cove

One summer day in Laguna Beach, one of my favorite spots called Shaws Cove.

I love gloomy beach. I find this dreamy melancholic mood so memorable and special. 

Water is very cold in California ocean even in mid summer. 

It's only 7 miles from home to the beach where it is usually at least 10 degree cooler.

ある夏の日のラグナビーチ、ショーズ・コブというお気に入りの場所。

どんより曇り空のビーチのこの幻想的なムードもなかなかステキ。

真夏でも水はとても冷たいカリフォルニアの海。

家からビーチまでほんの10キロほど、でも気温は常に5，6度は涼しいです。

Short Trip to Monterey/Carmel & 50th Anniversary 2021

 

Although I have never been to Europe before, "Old European Charm" seems to be the best to describe this town. Located in the central coast of California, it is 6-7 hour drive from where I live in Southern California. 

 

Since the plan to visit Japan in 2020 was canceled, the motivation of traveling, even a short day trip, had vanished inside me but I was grateful to take this one. 

The photo on the top is the road view past Los Angeles. You see Southern California have a desert feel, inhabited by cacti like this. So once you arrive in Monterey, you'll have a bit of culture shock by its photogenic atmosphere. I have to warn you though, it is rare to see the blue sky all year round and it is quite freezing cold in the winter:10-20°F difference from Southern California. But that's the part of the melancholic sentiment of this place.

We got lucky to be able to have a partially sunny day and that's when some of these photos were taken. 

 

After a few days of stay, I was ready to drive home. This trip gave me much inspiration and realization, making me miss my parents in Japan even more. They celebrated 50th anniversary this year and the pictures of the happy faces of mom & dad's brought special warmth to my heart. I hope we all will be able to see the separated loved ones very very soon.

ヨーロッパには行ったことがないけれど、「古いヨーロッパの趣」という描写がしっくりくるモントレー／カーメルの町。カリフォルニアの中央海岸部に位置し、南カリフォルニアから車で６～７時間ほど北上したところにあります。

去年予定していた日本への帰国が中止になってからというもの、日帰りの旅ですらすっかり意欲が失せていたのですが、今回えいっと思い切ってよかったです。

一番上の写真はロサンゼルスを過ぎた辺り。南カリフォルニアといえば、砂漠のような雰囲気もあってこんなサボテンの景色もよく見かけます。なのでモントレーに到着するとがらっと違う独特の情緒に軽いカルチャーショックを受けるかもしれません。お天気に関しては、一年を通して青空を見れる日は少なくて冬もとても寒くて南よりも5度から10度は違うので要注意。

でもこの町の物憂げなムードを演出するにはそれもぴったりだったりします。

 

幸いちらりと晴れ間が広がった日があり、こんな青い空を撮ることもできました。

 

数日経過したあたりで、さて帰ろうかという気持ちに。日本の両親に早く会いたいという気持ちも強まったりして、いろいろと気づかせてくれる刺激的な旅になりました。今年金婚式のお祝いをした父と母の幸せな笑顔いっぱいの写真を眺めてはほっこりしつつ、会いたい人に会えないこの状況が一日も早く、解消されますように・・・と願っています。

July’s creation and contemplation

This month has been a mixture of distraction and exploration.

Distraction from the 4th of July holiday, the sudden heat wave, World Cup and flooding in Japan.

Whether affected by these hectic events or not,

my mind echoes the saying - “Enjoy the little things”.

Instead of worrying or overthinking about the little things, make the ordinary things 

a little bit more extraordinary.. Just a little bit of twist could make a change.

Creativity is a unpredictable thing but I think I’ll be making more bezels with loose stones and 

some more delicate bracelets with tiny colorful gemstone beads for the rest of the month,

including July’s birthstones, ruby and carnelian.

今月は、散漫(動揺)と冒険心の混ざったような月のようです。

7月4日の独立記念日のお祭りムード、突然の酷暑、W杯や日本の洪水災害。

そんな目まぐるしい出来事が影響してか否か、

「ほんの小さなことに楽しみを見出そう」という言葉が頭の中でこだまする今日この頃。

ちょっとしたことをくよくよ考えたり、深読みしすぎたりする代わりに、

普段のあんなことやこんなことに少しだけ工夫をして変化を加えてみる。

物作りは予想のできないことが多いけれど、今月後半はルースストーンを石留めしたり、

小さなカラフルな石のビーズたちで繊細仕立てにブレスレットを作ったり、と

そんなことを構想しています。7月の誕生石のルビーやカーネリアンも登場させる予定。

Weekend exploration... flowers, water and wild animals bring happiness.

I’m amazed how tough my birdie friends (finches and mourning doves) are to have survived through 

the mad temperatures! They are a lot tougher than they look.

週末の散策。お花と海と野生動物が幸せ気分にしてくれる。

それにしても、うちにやってくる鳥たち・フィンチ(メキシコマシコ)と嘆きバトが

あの異常な激暑の中生き延びたなんて、見かけよりもずっとたくましいんだなあ、

と驚いています！

Weekend

    

 

 

 

Newport Beach was covered by thick clouds on Saturday.

But they were nice summer clouds to keep the temperature perfectly cool.

This friendly squirrel came to say hi, wondering if I would feed him.

Squirrels I usually encounter are very cautious and so quick to run off but this one seems to know how to charm up humans.

土曜日のニューポートビーチは厚い雲で覆われていましたが、

気温をほどよく下げてくれる夏の心地よい雲というかんじでした。

一匹のリスちゃんが、ご飯くれるのかな？といわんばかりに寄ってきました。

普段見かけるリスたちは、すごく慎重ですぐに走り去ってしまうのに、この子はどうやら人間に媚を売る術を熟知している様子。

  

 

And turtle Sunday!

I enjoy finding the wild ones in this lake every visit.

They are mainly big adults but this time, we saw (and caught!) the hatchling!

It was so cute and hard to let go but we did let it go.

After seeing it swimming around freely in the water with other adults, it's wrong to kidnap this cute thing!

Hope it will stay healthy and grow tough in the wild.

そして、カメさんの日曜日。

いつもここでは野生のカメたちを見つけるのが楽しみ。

だいたいどっしり大きな大人しか見かけないのに、今回はこの生まれたての赤ちゃんを

発見！(そして捕獲！)

かわいすぎて逃したくない気持ちを振り切り、逃がしてあげました。

水中を他の大人たちと自由に泳ぎ回ってる様子を見てしまうと、誘拐しちゃ可哀想。

健康に、タフに育つんだよ〜

Monterey Trip

 

 

It's been 2 years since last time I visited Monterey.

Luckily this was one of the sunniest weekends too.

This beautiful beach in Carmel had many driftwoods and crystallized rocks on the sand, amazing nature's creation.

 

 

 

前回から2年ぶりのモントレー。

幸いこの上ない快晴に恵まれた週末でした。

カーメルのこのステキなビーチ。砂浜には自然の創造物、流木や結晶の岩が転がっていました。

 

 

 

 

 

Pacific Grove is a quaint, cute old town.

I enjoyed my tea au lait at the coffee shop and

my panini at Cafe Ariana, the most generous panini I've ever had, by the way!

 

 

 

パシフィックグローブは古き良き趣のあるかわいい町。

コーヒーショップでティオレを、そしてカフェアリアーナではパニーニをいただきました。今まで食べた中で一番気前のよいパニーニだったのでした。

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rocky beach here is in Asilomar.

 

Birds including pelicans and also squirrels seemed to be enjoying the cold yet amazing sunny blue sky as well.

 

According to locals, the population of both tourists and residents has increased drastically over the few years. In fact, January this time used to be quite empty everywhere in town but I see it's not the case anymore. Hidden gem is being revealed..!

 

 

この岩々したビーチはアシロマー。

 

ペリカンなどの鳥たち、リスちゃんたちが、寒いけれども晴れ渡った青空を楽しんでいる様子。

 

地元の人々によると、ここ数年で観光客と住人の人口がぐっと増加したんだとか。確かに、1月のこの時期はもっとどこも閑散としていたものだけど、けっこう混んでたな。暴かれる秘宝なのでありました。

 

 

 

 

 

Said good bye to the town at sunset. Driving home took six and half hours but was very smooth.

 

 

夕日とともにさようなら。

6時間半もかかったけど、帰路はとてもスムーズでした。
