Peridot Pendant

 

Simple peridot teardrop pendant, posted on here.

Peridot, "gem of the sun", is August's birthstone, which history goes back to ancient times as early as 1500 B.C. The major source of rough peridot was, and still is, St. John's Island off the coast of Egypt. Yes of course, Egyptian pharaohs forced the islanders into collecting the olivine beauty, guarding the entire island so no trespassers would take the stone. Peridot was believed to protect the wearer from dangers and fears. Pharaohs must have needed the stone so badly to ease whatever paranoia they were suffering from, but possibly part of such anxiety was coming from greed and obsession towards the stone, maybe? Sounds a little ironic?

Anyway, who wouldn't be fond of the rich shine of this healing olive green?

シンプルなペリドットの雫型ペンダント、こちらに出品しました。

「太陽の石」ペリドットは8月の誕生石。その歴史は紀元前1500年まで遡ります。ペリドット原石の原産地はエジプト沖のセントジョーンズ島。となると、エジプトのファラオたちが島の住人たちに石の採掘を強いていた、というのも想像に難くないお話。しかも外部からの侵入者を恐れ、島の周りをがっちり見張らせていたんだとか。危険や恐怖に対するお守りだったペリドット。ファラオたちも心の安らぎを求めてこの石にすがったに違いないけれど、でも逆に、この石に対する欲深さ、独占欲が不安感に加担したとも考えられるのでは・・・？と突っ込みたくもありますが・・。

なにはともあれ、この癒しのオリーブグリーンの深い輝きに惹かれない人はいないはず。

8月生まれさんはラッキーですね！
