Be Yourself

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment" by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I find this quote somewhat encouraging... but wait... he lived in 19th century...in Lincoln time!! Although it might mean something else, it sounds to me "Don't rush so much to try to achieve something. Just being yourself is difficult enough in this world." At the same time this makes me think that "a world" or people's life might not have changed much since then....

ラルフ・ワルド・エマーソンの引用句、『常に自分を別の何者かに変えてしまおうとするこの世の中で、自分自身でいることは最大の達成だ』。おお、なんか励まされる・・・けどちょっと待った！この人、19世紀のリンカーン時代の人ではないですか！となると、彼の意味するところはまた別にあるかもなのですが、こんなふうに聞こえるのです。『何かを成し遂げようとそんなに焦らなくてもいいよ。自分自身でいることだけでも大変な世の中なのだから。』と。同時に、『世の中』、もしくは人生は今も昔もあまり変わらないということなのかな、なんて思えたり・・・・。
