Japanese Furoshiki Art

I realized that explaining traditional things that I grew up with is not easy! Maybe because I never wondered about their origins. For example, furoshiki is a type of wrapping cloth that had been used to transport clothes, gifts, foods, or any other goods since around 700 AD. The name "furoshiki", which was named about 600 years later or so, literally meaning "bath spread" derives from the use during bath time. (Yes, I googled it. How awful!!)  Something traditional that you never paid attention to, something that were just there for use, otherwise, sitting behind the closet or forgotten in the storage. The concept of adopting such traditional items into our modern life, making them look new and creative always amazes me. "Musubi", the furoshiki shop in Tokyo seems to be an initiator of furoshiki revival movement in Japan. Here's the book on how to knot and enjoy furoshiki↓


子供の頃から身近にあった伝統的なものについて説明するのはなかなか難しいなあ、とつくづく思います。多分、その起源などについて考えたことがないからかもしれません。例えば、風呂敷。洋服、贈り物、食べ物やその他を包んで運ぶ布として奈良時代から活躍してきました。風呂敷という名がついたのは室町時代で、入浴時に使用したことに由来しているとのこと。(はい、ググりました。こんな有様です・・・！！）特別なものとして注意を払ってこず、なんというか、なんとなく使っていただけというか、でなければ、クローゼットで眠っているか、納戸で忘れられているか・・。そのような伝統的なアイテムを新しく創造的に見せながら今日の生活の中に取り入れるというコンセプトにはいつも驚かされます。「むす美」という東京の風呂敷専門店は日本での風呂敷再来の先駆け者のようです。こちらは風呂敷の結び方、楽しみ方の本です↓

The day after posting this blog, I was digging around my fabric collection that I brought back from Japan and found Musubi's fusoshiki! This is another example of not being aware of it. What a coincidence though!
